Black History Month Celebration

On Tuesday, February 25, the Department of Climate, Culture, & Equity hosted its third annual Black History Month Celebration, an event that brought the Paramount community together to honor the rich heritage and contributions of Black culture.

From start to finish, the event radiated energy and excitement, fueled by dynamic student speakers who led the celebration with enthusiasm, maturity, and professionalism. Their voices drove the event forward, showcasing the talent and passion of the next generation. 

The evening featured a variety of performances that highlighted the diverse talents within the district. The celebration opened with an uplifting song by Collins teacher Larry Houston, whose performance set the tone for the evening. Performing groups included Alondra Middle School, Zamboni Dance Team, and the Paramount Singers. In addition, Buena Vista student Jailyn Lawson captivated the audience with an original song, and PHS student Janyeh Sutherland touched hearts with the powerful poem, Still I Rise, by Maya Angelou.  

Before the main program, attendees had the opportunity to explore booths and enjoy food while learning about Black history and culture. The lively atmosphere fostered meaningful connections as guests shared conversations and learned from one another. 

A heartfelt thank you was extended to all the vendors who contributed to the success of the event, as well as to Superintendent Dr. Lightle and the Board of Education for their continued support. The celebration also underscored the commitment of the Paramount Unified School District to meet the evolving and diverse needs of all students. The celebration was a reflection of the ongoing work to create inclusive spaces for students, families, and staff. The celebration was a powerful and inspiring reminder of the importance of diversity, inclusion, and unity in the educational community.
