Jackson Middle School AVID Showcase Highlights Student Leadership

Jackson Middle School AVID Showcase Highlights Student Leadership

On February 26, Jackson Middle School welcomed educators from neighboring districts, including Bellflower, Newport Mesa, Lynwood, and Mountain View, for its AVID Showcase. Visitors were given a firsthand look at how AVID strategies are implemented in classrooms across Paramount Unified.

School Board Member Alicia Anderson, Superintendent Dr. Joshua Lightle and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Linsey Gotanda were in attendance.

The event was coordinated and hosted by Principal Kelly Anderson.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, supports students in building organization skills, strengthening critical thinking, and preparing for college and career success. At Jackson, these strategies are embedded throughout the school day.

After a brief welcome, students led the experience. Student ambassadors guided visiting teams across campus, answered questions, and introduced classroom learning. Inside science classrooms, students discussed continental drift, supporting their ideas with evidence. In language arts, students facilitated a Socratic Seminar, respectfully challenging one another to think deeply and defend their reasoning. Teachers served as guides, while students owned the learning.

The most powerful takeaway was clear: Students demonstrated confidence, leadership, and high expectations for themselves and one another.

Families interested in learning more about Jackson Middle School and the many opportunities available throughout Paramount Unified are encouraged to contact their local school or explore enrollment options. Both Paramount residents and neighboring transfer families are welcome to discover the strong academic programs and supportive learning environments our schools provide.
